The luxury packaging of Huawei FreeBuds Pro 4 earplugs immediately stands out. The box, in a stylish black-brown shade with golden accents, contains an elegant charging box and matching earbuds. They are also available in white and green. In addition, the package contains two sets of three extra ear tips: silicone ear tips in sizes XS, S and L, and Shape-Memory foam ear tips in sizes S, M and L. This ensures that an optimal passive end of external sound can be achieved for each ear.
Optionally, the earbuds can use ANC (Active Noise Canceling) or the Awareness mode, with which you can better observe the environment. The Huawei Ai Life app offers the possibility to measure the quality of the passive closure. The earbuds, excluding charging case, are protected against water and dust with an IP54 classification.
A striking feature is that with telephone calls a system of three microphones produce an exceptionally clear voice, free from environmental sounds. This is made possible by the AI Call Noise Cancellation algorithm, which distinguishes voting frequencies from background noises and effectively removes it. This also guarantees the privacy of the caller.
The service takes place with the stalks. The command is given by tapping, squeezing or sweeping as stated in the app and can be adjusted by the user to his own liking. The volume is adjusted with sweeping along the stem. Operation with the head is possible when accepting or refusing telephone calls.
Technology
The 6 grams of earbuds are equipped with a 11mm dynamic dual driver, which ensures a consistent and clear audio reproduction. For optimum performance of hi-res audio from 14Hz to 48 kHz/24 bit, with a loss-free audio stream of 2.3 Mbps. The Huawei L2HC 4.0 Audiocodec is necessary on both sides, but the availability of this is currently limited. In addition, the earbuds offer standard support for SBC, AAC and Hi-res LDAC. The communication is via Bluetooth 5.2, with which you can simultaneously connect to two devices.
Practical experience and conclusion
The sound reproduction is impressive: clear and dynamic sound that can compete with the more expensive earbuds. The ANC works properly and has 4 modes incl. Dynamic adjustment. The results are somewhat less than of the more expensive models. 8 presets are present for the display. Via the manual equalizer you can also add presets yourself.
We have also tested the oppression of environmental sounds during telephone conversations in noise -like environments and be able to state that a special performance is being delivered.
The battery life depends on the use of ANC and the type of codec. With the commonly used AAC codec, the earbuds last up to 7 hours, with 26 extra hours in the charging case, which yields a total of 33 hours. When using ANC and High-res codecs, the usage time decreases.
Charging via USB-C takes 40 minutes for the earbuds and 1 hour before the charging case. Wireless charging is also possible, but this takes considerably longer. These values are on average compared to competitors.
