Utrecht 2.5 times as expensive as Rotterdam

There are huge price differences in the rates of public charging stations in the four largest cities in the Netherlands. In Utrecht it is relatively expensive, while in Rotterdam and The Hague it is cheap to charge. The differences are partly due to energy contracts.
Charging your electric car at a public charging station is almost 2.5 times as expensive in Utrecht as in Rotterdam. This is evident from an analysis by comparison site Pricewise. The rate differences in the four largest cities in the Netherlands are increasing. The average prices are even so different that it would be cheaper for people from Utrecht to drive back and forth to Rotterdam to charge the car there.
With an average charging rate of 79 cents per kWh, the municipality of Utrecht is clearly number one of the most expensive municipalities to charge your car. Amsterdam follows in second place with an average rate of 56 cents, which means a difference of 23 cents per kWh. It is another 23 cents cheaper in The Hague, where you pay an average rate of 33 cents. Rotterdam is even cheaper, with an average rate of 31 cents.
The differences can partly be explained by the contracts that the providers have concluded with the energy companies. Those who have a long-term contract can usually still benefit from ‘old’ low rates. The Utrecht city council also sets a basic price for all providers who operate public charging stations in the city. The municipality wants to prevent providers from getting into financial problems and no longer investing in new charging stations. Considerable local price differences arise in Amsterdam due to the wide variety of providers of public charging stations.
