Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Well and Wee

Hyundai was very successful with the introduction of the Ioniq 5. The angular retro design of the 45 Concept was actually imitated in a production model. The Ioniq 5 also had a number of firsts for Hyundai. How is the striking model doing in the Netherlands and which versions are most popular with customers? Time to get to the detailed sales figures.

The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s first car specifically developed as an EV. It is also the first model to be featured on the company’s new modular E-GMP platform and the first member of Hyundai’s new electric Ioniq line. To date, the Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s only EV in that model line. This year he will be joined by a lower brother that is on the same platform: the Ioniq 6. Concern partner Kia also has an offer on the E-GMP platform with the electric EV6.

Hyundai reports that until March 8, 2022, 1,936 Ioniqs 5 have been registered in the Netherlands. At its introduction, the Ioniq 5 was available with two battery packs: 58 kWh and 72.6 kWh. The smaller battery pack is only available with a 170 hp electric motor on the rear axle. Hyundai supplies the larger battery in combination with both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. Then the Ioniq 5 has 218 or 306 hp respectively. The latter is still the case, but Hyundai no longer supplies the battery pack of 72.6 kWh. That battery capacity has now been increased to 77.4 kWh with a model year update. Every Ioniq 5 now also has Smart Frequency Dampers, which should filter out irregularities better.

To date, customers of the Ioniq 5 in the Netherlands have most often opted for the larger battery in combination with rear-wheel drive. No fewer than 1,389 of the 1,936 sold Ioniqs 5 had that powertrain. The version with 58 kWh was the least chosen: only 265 customers opted for that variant. Apparently, the Ioniq 5 buyer does not care very much about the SEPP subsidy, because the 58 kWh version in the basic Style version is the only Ioniq 5 that is below the subsidy limit of €45,000. The most powerful Ioniq 5 with four-wheel drive was only marginally more popular, with total sales of 282 units.

Strikingly, the most expensive version, the Lounge, is the most popular in terms of equipment level: 830 customers ordered their Ioniq 5 in this way. In second place are the Connect and Connect+, which are just below the Lounge in terms of price and luxury. In those versions, of which Hyundai bundled the figures, 558 Ioniqs 5 rolled out of the showroom. Basic Style Style was chosen 360 times. The introductory version Project 45, which was only available as a 306 hp 72.6 kWh AWD, is the rarest version of the Ioniq 5 with 188 units. In a table, the numbers are as follows:

battery/drive style Connect (+) lounge Project 45 Total
58 kWh RWD 117 104 43 0 265
72.6 kWh RWD 242 401 746 0 1,389
72.6 kWh AWD 0 53 41 188 282
Total 360 558 830 188 1.936

The Ioniq 5 was most often ordered in the Gravity Gold Matte exterior color. 461 of the 1,936 Ioniqs 5 were painted in that colour. In second and third place are Phantom Black Pearl (366 copies) and Digital Teal-Green Pearl (216 copies). The least popular – or most exclusive color, if you will – is Lucid Blue Pearl: only 90 Ioniqs 5 go on the street in that color. For the interior, black, Obsidian Black, is the most chosen with 1,183 times, followed by Dark Teal/Light Grey, a combination of dark green and gray with which 603 Ioniqs 5 are equipped. The light gray interior in the photo below is by far the least popular: only 150 cars have such an interior.

You will not find Ioniqs 5 with a panoramic roof very often: only 152 customers ordered this option, which is only available on the most expensive version, the Lounge.

refresher
