Hyundai’s N division proves that the electrical engineering that Hyundai has put in the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 can also be combined excellently with sportiness. During the N-Day event, Hyundai’s sports department virtually beats anyone who still doubted it by presenting two fierce study models. This is the most concrete: the RN22e.

Hyundai N has given its muscles an electric charge during N-Day held in its home country South Korea. The sports department of Hyundai fires not one, but two study models on car land, one even more spectacular than the other. The RN22e flexing its muscles alongside the N Vision 74 is the most concrete of the bunch. It is clear that this is a fierce Hyundai Ioniq 6 converted to a sporty N variant.

The RN22e is to the Ioniq 6 what the 2016 RN30 was to the i30: a preview of an electric sports version. The RN30 Concept eventually dried up as Hyundai’s first N model: the i30 N. However, the possible N variant of the Ioniq 6 will not be the first electric Hyundai to receive the N treatment. That honor belongs to the Ioniq 5. Test samples of the Ioniq 5 N have already appeared in public several times. Thanks to this RN22e, we now know to a certain extent what to expect from the Ioniq 5 N.

585 hp and 740 Nm

The RN22e certainly has no shortage of electrical muscle power. The fierce concept car has two electric motors that together deliver 585 hp and 740 Nm. Do those numbers look familiar to you? Then it may very well be right. The Kia EV6, which shares its E-GMP basis with the Ioniq 5 and 6, has exactly the same powertrain as GT. That means the RN22e is secretly a lot more concrete than you think! The well-known 77.4 kWh battery is located in the bottom. The top speed of the Hyundai RN22e is above 250 km/h. The story does not say how long the 0-100 sprint lasts, but you can count on it being beeped in just 3.5 seconds, just like in the Kia EV6 GT.

packed

As the first concrete preview of a fully electric Hyundai N model, the RN22e is packed with fun-enhancing things. For example, the N division of Hyundai N indicates that most models will have an electronic differential lock and Corner Carving Differential, which should push the disadvantages of the inevitably higher weight of EVs to the background as much as possible. Hyundai describes the RN22e as a driving laboratory and so the N-club immediately stamps one experimentally torque vectoringsystem.

The power distribution between the front and rear wheels is quite variable thanks to a range of driving modes. To properly calm down the rapidly buzzing RN22e, the concept car features track-adjusted braking with four-piston claws and 40-centimeter discs. Hyundai N indicates that the braking system can also be used to further reduce leaning in bends by making minor interventions. Both inside and out, the RN22e should also reach the eardrums in a pleasant way thanks to an N Sound+ dubbed system.

In order to keep the weight of the heavy-looking Hyundai RN22e relatively within limits, the show car is packed with parts that are made from lightweight materials using a 3D printer. The RN22e is a well-developed Ioniq 6 with ‘disappeared’ rear doors, whipped wheel arches with a cooling opening at the rear, sporty bumper work, an impressive diffuser, a large wing at the back, extra air intakes next to the ‘angry-eyed’ headlights and a front cover with an extra cooling slot. So it’s more than just an Ioniq 6 with a rear spoiler.

As mentioned, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N will be the first electric N model. It will be on the market in 2023. We assume that that car – as previously predicted – will receive the 585 hp powertrain that is also hung in this RN22e. Undoubtedly, Hyundai did not just put forward the Ioniq 6 as a showcase for the technical knowledge and skills of its N department. You can therefore count on the Ioniq 6 being the next Hyundai after the Ioniq 5 to receive an N treatment.
