Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid: more than 50 kilometers electric

Hyundai has put the plug-in hybrid version of the new Tucson in the spotlight. The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid is 50 kilometers away on one battery charge. In the spring of next year, the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid will be at Dutch dealers.

Highlights

  • More than 50 kilometers electric
  • 265 hp plug-in hybrid
  • four-wheel drive
  • from spring 2021 in the Netherlands

Hyundai introduced the fourth-generation Tucson to the world in September, simultaneously shedding light on some of the powertrains that will make the new SUV available. The new Hyundai Tucson will have a mild hybrid engine version, a regular hybrid and a plug-in hybrid powertrain. No technical specifications were yet known for the latter. Until now.

Plug-in hybrid

The Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid has a 1.6 T-GDI under the hood, a blown four-cylinder petrol engine that works together with a 90 hp electric motor. The system power of the plug-in hybrid Tucson is 265 hp and 350 Nm. These forces are distributed over all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor draws its zest for life from a 13.8 kWh battery pack located under the load floor of the luggage compartment. The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid must be able to drive ‘more than 50 kilometers’ electrically. The electric range is also an estimate. The Tucson plug has a 7.2 kW on-board charger. Of course, the battery pack takes up some luggage space. Where the mild-hybrid Tucson 577-1,756 liters and the Tucson Hybrid 616-1,795 liters, the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid nestles exactly in between with 558-1,737. The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid can optionally be fitted with an adaptive chassis that Hyundai Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) has dubbed.

Always electrified

The new Hyundai Tucson is always electrified. The basic version that will be available in the Netherlands has a mild-hybrid 150 hp 1.6 T-GDI as power plant. That petrol engine is still always linked to Hyundai’s iMT manual gearbox that disconnects from the engine as soon as you let go of the accelerator. One step above that entry-level is the 230 hp Tucson Hybrid. This variant, which is basically front-wheel drive but also available with four-wheel drive, has a 60 hp electric motor and a 1.49 kWh battery pack. As in the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, the transmission here is a six-speed automatic.

Prices of the Hyundai Tucson are not yet known.
