If you have a dental implant put in, do you have to walk with just a pin in your mouth for a while before a new tooth comes in, or does something provisional come in first?

A few years ago I got a swing against my front tooth, it was then straightened again, but the root was completely broken off. The dentist informed me last week that it will loosen over time and that a dental implant will have to be placed. This is done by means of a pin on which a new tooth is placed. My question was whether I first have to walk around with just that pin, or will there be a provisional tooth on it so that you don’t see it. It’s in the front of my mouth and I don’t like walking around without a tooth or with a pin.

Dear Tielke,

Why didn’t your dentist tell you this, I wonder now.

Normally you get a provisional plastic marker over the pin, so it shouldn’t stand out too much. A little later you get a full-fledged, well-adjusted false tooth.

So I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it! But ask your dentist for more advice.

Kind regards
