Illuminated logos soon to be legal in Europe

A sigh of relief sweeps through automotive land: illuminated logos will soon be legalized in Europe as well.

Do not immediately react angrily: we also know that this is actually about nothing at all. At the same time, however, we can imagine that many car manufacturers are happy with it, because Europe has been a bit of a drag in the field of illuminated logos so far. The most clear reference to this can be found on the nose and butt of the Volkswagen ID3 and ID4. Outside Europe, those cars are equipped with an illuminated Volkswagen logo and the design seems to be fully equipped for that. In Europe, however, the brand is forced to suffice with white-painted logos. Rolls-Royce even had to remove the previously installed lighting under the ‘Spirit of Ecstacy’, but only – you guessed it – in Europe.

Random

Now you can find all kinds of things about such a glowing logo, but the fact is that the ban on it seems a bit arbitrary. The striking LED light bar on the aforementioned ID models and – for example – the EQ models from Mercedes-Benz is allowed. The same goes for illuminated grilles, such as those offered by BMW on the X6. Specifically banning the lighting of a logo therefore seems a bit strange.

This strange situation will soon come to an end, the RDW confirms. Precise details are not yet available, but under the United Nations’ UNECE World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) the lighting will become legal under certain conditions. The main requirement seems to be that the illuminated logo must be ‘within the surface of a signal lamp’. Whether the high-ranking logo of Rolls-Royce will be legalized with this remains to be seen.

Renault 4

We already know that the production version of the Renault 4, which was presented as a concept car yesterday, will have such an illuminated logo. That announcement by Renault was even the reason to dive into this. The electric Renault 4 with its illuminated ‘wybertje’ will appear in 2025. Legalization must take place earlier, but certainly not before 2023.
