Volkswagen pulls the curtain on the ID5, the coupé variant of the ID4, which will be positioned just a little higher. AutoWeek was allowed to view the model and these are the details.
Highlights
- 520 km range
- Immediately also as GTX
- On the market mid next year
- Rear or four-wheel drive
A flattened ID4: it’s tempting to call it that, but that description doesn’t do the ID5 justice. Like many other brands, Volkswagen also wants to position the coupĂ© variant of an SUV just a little higher in the pecking order. The ID5 does this with a slightly different appearance, in which the wide-spreaded rear stands out in particular. This has the remarkable side effect that the trunk of the ID5 with its 549 liters is a fraction (6 liters) larger than that of the ID4. Speaking of side effects: that of the sloping roofline, namely less headroom, is limited to 12 mm, so that you as an adult are still fine. Of course, the generous legroom is preserved, which is a result of the electric platform. The wheelbase measures 2.77 m and in total the ID5 is 4.60 m. The Cw value is 0.26 (0.27 for the GTX), compared to 0.28 for the ID4.
Interior
In addition to the other coach, Volkswagen has also lifted the interior to a higher level with more luxurious materials and versions. Animal raw materials are banned, so only artificial leather. Navigation works with, among other things, ‘mass location data’ and is linked to active lane assistance and adaptive cruise control. The new 3.0 version of the MEB software debuts in the ID5 and is kept up to date over the air. The number of physical buttons is limited and for those who say ‘Hello ID’, the ID5 is all ears. The head-up display works with augmented reality, which ‘projects’ navigation directions about ten meters in front of the car. In addition, a light strip under the windscreen provides not only mood lighting, but also warnings of lurking hazards such as suddenly braking ahead.

Volkswagen ID5
Motorizations
The ID5 comes with a choice of three different powertrains. The entry-level model will be the Pro with 174 hp on the rear axle. The Pro Performance is also rear-wheel drive, but with 204 hp. Finally, the GTX also has a front motor, delivering a system power of up to 299 horsepower in a 30-second boost. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The Pro does that in 10.4 s, the Pro Performance in 8.4 s. The GTX has a top speed of 180 km/h, both other versions 160 km/h. The Pro and Pro Performance are allowed to pull 1,200 kg braked, the GTX 1,400 kg. All three motorizations get the 77 kWh battery, which gives the GTX a range of 480 km WLTP and the rear-wheel drive 520 km. You can charge AC with 11 kW and DC with a maximum of 135 kW, where you can go from 5 to 80 percent in 29 minutes.

Volkswagen ID5
CO2-neutral production
The Volkswagen ID5 will roll off the production line in Zwickau, Germany, from next year, for the time being exclusively for Europe, and at that time, Volkswagen promises, each car has not yet produced a gram of CO2. Prices are not yet known, but a well-informed whispered to us that the intention is that an ID5 will be about €1,500 more expensive than a comparable ID4.
