The Image Capture and Photos programs make it easy to transfer photos from a digital camera, phone, or tablet to your Mac.
Program Image Capture
Image Capture is a simple, yet useful program. All the program does is import photos to the Mac. The advantage is that you decide where you want to save the photos. If you import photos via the Photos program, they will also end up in this program. With Image Capture, you can simply select a Finder folder, such as “Pictures,” and save the photos directly there.
Import with Image Capture
Import photos with the Image Capture program like this:
- click on finder > apps (macOS 10.15 Catalina or later) or Programs (macOS 10.14 Mojave).
- Double click on photo loader.
- Connect the device, for example a camera or phone, to the Mac using the supplied USB cable and turn on the device.
- When you connect a tablet or smartphone, you usually have to indicate on the device that you trust the computer. If the device is protected with a password, you must enter it first.
- On the Mac, the Photos program will probably open automatically as well. Close this program via the cross in the red ball to return to Image Capture.
- In the left part of the window is the name of the connected device. If you have multiple devices connected via USB, there are also multiple devices here. Click on the correct device.
- On the right appear the photos that are on the device. Click on the drop-down menu at the bottom of the window behind ‘Import to’ and click on the folder where you want to save the photos. Can’t find the right folder? Then click on Others, navigate to the correct folder and click Choose or Open.
- click on Import everything to place all the photos in the folder. Just want to import some photos? Then click on the photos, while holding down the Cmd key and then click on Import.
The photos have been imported into the selected folder, and have been given a check mark in Image Capture.

Photos offers the possibility to import, manage and edit your photos. In addition, the program works with your iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com via iCloud Photo Library.
