In 2021, the government will bring in about the same amount of MRB

The motor vehicle tax will yield about the same for the government treasury next year as this year, the Central Bureau of Statistics expects. In total, this is expected to be € 6.1 billion.

Over the past ten years, the total revenue from motor vehicle tax (central government and the provinces) has steadily increased. In 2010 the total was still at € 5 billion, this year it amounted to roughly € 6.1 billion. Statistics Netherlands expects stabilization for next year, because then it will be roughly the same amount. € 4.4 billion is received directly by central government, € 1.7 billion is collected from the provincial surcharges.

The distribution does change marginally. For example, the share that the government will bring in is expected to fall by 0.6 percent, while the provinces will collect 2.5 percent more mrb. The provincial surcharges will increase slightly next year in five provinces. This is the case in Utrecht, North Brabant, Gelderland, Groningen and Flevoland. In addition, the fleet is also growing slightly. However, the increase in electric cars is holding back a stronger growth in yield. After all, no mrb has to be paid for this.
