In the Wild: Nash-Healey (1953)

Today a very special classic shines on the digital stage of In het Wild. We would like to thank an anonymous Techzle reader for the Nash-Haeley submitted by him!

The Nash-Healey is a two-seater drawn by the skilful hand of design house Pininfarina and sold by Nash-Kelvinator. Nash-Kelvinator was created in 1938 through a merger between car maker Nash and Kelvinator, a home appliance manufacturer. Nash-Kelvinator, incidentally, melted together with Hudson Motor Car Company in 1954 into the headstrong brand AMC (American Motors Corporation). Back to this beautifully lined classic, a car that came about from a collaboration between Nash-Kelvinator and the English car maker Donald Healey.

This concours-looking Nash-Healey dates from 1953 and has been camping within the Dutch borders since 2018. Under the beautifully curved and air-hooded hood of this roadster, a 143-horsepower 4,128 cc six-in-line from the Nash Ambassador serves as a powerhouse. This was the engine used between 1952 and 1954. The first series of the Nash-Healey, produced in a limited edition between 1951 and 1952, was powered by a 127 hp 3.8 six-in-line.

Not only technically, the Nash-Healey visible in these photos differed from the one introduced in 1951 (photo 4). The newly designed coaches produced by Pininfarina in Turin included headlights integrated into the grille, a design element that made the car more suitable for its sister models from Nash. Initially, the Nash-Healey only existed as a roadster, but in 1953 a coupé was also added to the delivery range. Cutbacks in 1954 saw the now AMC-based Nash cut the open Healey from the range. 1954 was also the last year that the coupé would be built.

* Unfortunately we do not have a picture of the back of this snapped one in the Netherlands. However, we have added an image of another copy showing the beautiful classic from behind (photo 3).
