In the Wild: Toyota Camry (1983)

The Toyota Camry is normally not really a widely represented car on Dutch roads, so one of the very first generation is a really nice spot. That is why this copy certainly deserves a moment of attention in a new ‘In the Wild’.

Lovers of the Toyota Camry are not really in their element here in the Netherlands, because since the turn of the century Camry’s have only been added to the street scene. There are also undoubtedly enough disappeared to the eternal rust fields. On the other side of the world, you are still thrown to death, because in the US, for example, it is still one of the best-selling cars. Here in the Netherlands, too, the Camry was relatively successful for years. The first three generations, in the 80s and 90s, were worn quite well here.

The copy in the above photos, spotted and photographed by Techzle reader Michael Buurma, is a surviving evidence of this. It is a first generation Camry, from the second year that the Camry was available here (1983). You will not find it any older than this. It is fair to say that unfortunately the years can be seen. While it’s nice that someone has kept this Camry on the road, there seems to be a sufficient foundation for improvement. The rust devil has already found the rear wheel arches. In addition, this otherwise very unpretentious car would be better if it was on original wheels.

That does not mean that it remains a nice thing, such a Camry. Undoubtedly it will not go wrong for his age. The 90 hp 1.8 that lies in the nose of the Toyota, turns the sedan weighing just over 1,000 kilos into a car that can still handle current traffic. You will not draw stripes at the traffic light, but that was of course never the intention of the Camry. The fact that it concerns the DX version means that this Camry is devoid of any form of luxury that was available. Just a nice piece of driving time. Hopefully still good for several years of reliable transport, provided that rust formation is prevented in time, of course.
