In these municipalities, drivers are often caught under the influence

Slightly fewer fines were issued for drivers under the influence in the past year. Yet there were still over 42,000, which is much more than before corona. Relatively many fines have been issued in some municipalities.

Last year, the Dutch police fined 42,799 road users who were under the influence. Slightly less than a year earlier (when there were 43,388), but the number of official reports was almost a third higher than before corona. In 2019, there were 32,541 fines. This is evident from research by Independent based on the most recent police figures. This concerns road users who have been fined for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or certain medication that you are not allowed to use on the road.

Things often went wrong last year, especially in South Holland. With 11,282 fines, the province even accounts for more than a quarter of all fines in the Netherlands. Many road users are also fined for driving under the influence in North Holland (7,371) and North Brabant (6,192). The latter province was also the largest increase in the number of fines with an increase of 66.5 percent.

If we zoom in on the municipalities, there are also outliers when we look at the number of fines compared to the number of residents aged 15 or older. In the North Holland municipality of Oostzaan, for example, there are almost 120 fines per 10,000 people over 15. This number is more than four times higher than the national average. This is followed by Maashorst, with 76.1 fines per 10,000 people over 15, Wassenaar (67.5 fines), Valkenburg (63) and Bergen in Limburg (61.8). Below you can see per municipality how often a fine is issued.
