Indian has issued a recall for the 2024 Challenger, Chieftain, Pursuit, Roadmaster and Springfield families. The rear suspension pushrod can buckle and fail, which in the worst case could result in a crash.
On May 14, 2024, Indian Motorcycle Company was notified by a dealer of a rear suspension pushrod failure. Six days later, IMC logged a rear shock pushrod failure during an annual validation test, when the suspension bottomed out after the rider hit a pothole at the test facility, which opened in April 2024.
On June 1, 2024, IMC recorded a second rear suspension pushrod failure during testing on a test unit built in April 2024. On June 7, 2024, IMC recorded a third rear suspension pushrod failure at the test track and on the same date, IMC received a second external report of a failed pushrod.
On June 17, 2024, IMC completed testing of the internal components of the defective test bike and identified a potential metallurgical issue in the hardness of the suspect pushrod material.
On June 18, 2024, IMC received a third external report of a failed pushrod from a dealer and initiated an investigation, including contacting the pushrod supplier. On June 27, 2024, IMC received a fourth external report of a failed pushrod.
IMC has found no reports of collisions, injuries, or fatalities related to this reported issue and has not identified any NDFRs. On July 16, 2024, the IMC Executive Review Committee determined that the rear suspension pushrod issue was a safety-related defect.
The Indian dealer will replace the push rod with a new one free of charge. Riders who have already had the push rod replaced will be reimbursed by Intian for these costs.
