Indian Motorcycle has rolled out a recall in the United States for a laundry list of models, including the Challenger and FTR 1200 in all trims from 2020-2022. Due to a software error in the ABS module, the brake light may come on spontaneously.

On September 28, 2021, during a routine check, Polaris discovered a social media post about problems with brake lights and immediately launched an investigation that ran from October 2021 to the end of March 2022. That investigation showed that the issue with the brake light was caused by a software error in a component from a supplier, the Bosch ABS 9.1M Plus module.
On April 9, 2022, the Polaris Executive Review Committee determined that the deviation was considered minor to safety, based on Polaris’ analysis, which included the brief illumination of the brake light and the fact that the problem only occurred under specific conditions, and that there were no known accidents or injuries associated with the problem.
On April 13, 2022, Indian Motorcycle (Polaris) reported the discrepancy to the NHTSA – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (and later amended the report on September 9, 2022). On May 13, 2022, Polaris requested a determination by NHTSA that the variance in question was unimportant to road safety, describing the specific circumstances in which the brake lighting problem occurred and referencing approved requests for similar lighting problems.
On January 26, 2024, Polaris received notice from NHTSA that the request had not been approved. On February 2, 2024, Polaris filed the Noncompliance Notice 573 Report after receiving notice of NHTSA’s decision on the request.
