Harbinger for EV era at Infiniti?
In Pebble Beach, Infiniti shows what its new design language embraces and does so with the QX Monograph Concept: a seemingly quite production-ready SUV that probably replaces the Infiniti QX80 in a not too much modified form. The brand does not say a word about the technology, so we mainly focus on the new design features here.
Since the beginning of 2021, Infiniti, Nissan’s more luxury sister brand, has stopped selling cars in Europe. In the United States, among others, the brand is still very much alive. Although; The Japanese have not produced so much news in recent years, but that must change.
That starts with a new design language and a new emblem. The Infiniti logo, which basically consists of an oval and a triangle, will be applied more three-dimensionally on future Infiniti’s and will now also have an ‘open’ triangle at the top. That logo adorns the QX Monograph Concept – as the design harbinger is called – in a grille that is made up of slightly non-vertical elements and which should be reminiscent of a bamboo forest.
With fashion
Furthermore, Infiniti applies a light bar at the front and rear that consists of separate parts that, according to the brand, mimic the shape of piano keys and the relative straightness of the carriage is striking. Where the current QX80, which may be succeeded by the production version of this concept, still has a side window section that shows some sculpture at the rear, this concept has a visually continuous glass section. In that respect, there seems to be a trend in the land of large SUVs: they are increasingly designed in a straight line.
Incidentally, we see another trend in the Monograph Concept: the (almost) complete absence of chrome. If you look at the outgoing QX80, it immediately seems much more traditional, while the Monograph Concept is not very concept-like at all. The current QX80 only has a chrome-framed grille and side window and has ‘traditional’, separate headlights. If those things are dropped – as with the new concept – then it all looks much more modern.
Electric or conventional?
As mentioned, Infiniti does not reveal anything about the technology that is hidden in the QX Monograph Concept. We don’t even know if this is an electric or conventionally powered concept. Nissan, parent company of Infiniti, wants to release the necessary EVs during the coming years, including Infinitis. We wouldn’t be surprised if the new design language presented today debuts on an electric model.
