Instagram Focus: Take portraits without a dual camera lens

With ‘Focus’ for Instagram, you can take portrait photos, even if your iPhone has only one camera lens. It also becomes easier to tag friends who pass by in your Story. In this tip, we’ll show you how it works.

Instagram Focus: portrait photos for (almost) everyone

The iPhone camera has been known for its Portrait function for a number of years. As the name suggests, this allows you to create a professional-looking portrait of someone, blurring the background and making the person stand out. An iPhone with a dual camera lens is required for this, which puts many users out of the way.

With the new Focus function of Instagram, you can now also take beautiful portrait photos for Instagram. You can find the feature in the Instagram camera next to ‘Superzoom’. As soon as the camera detects a face, the background becomes blurred and contrast is created. You take photos by tapping the screen, while for videos you have to hold down the screen a little longer.

Focus works on both the rear and front camera, so you can easily shoot a portrait of yourself. The feature also rolls out to iPhone models with only one rear camera. You can use Focus from the iPhone SE and iPhone 6S.

The Focus function, on the other hand, applies artificial tricks and works through facial recognition. After detecting a face, the photo is actually processed very quickly, without you as a user noticing it.

Mention: Tag friends easier and faster

After taking a portrait photo or video, it also becomes easier to give it a personal touch. This is possible with the new ‘mention’ function. After taking a photo, tap the mention sticker, enter a friend’s name, and choose from one of the standard options. You can then adjust it to your heart’s content. The Instagram update is currently rolling out so it may take a while for the Focus button and new Mention feature to be available to you.
