Instagram releases Threads: Insta, but for only your best friends

Instagram has presented Threads. The app is best described as Instagram, but only for you and your closest friends. Photos, videos and Stories remain within the group of friends. Threads will be out later this week.

Threads: Instagram, but for the group of friends

Facebook, the parent company of Instagram, has received a lot of criticism in recent years. The company is said to be lax with user privacy and facilitate online harassment. Mark Zuckerberg gave last F8, the annual Facebook event, that the helm would turn completely. All Facebook apps would focus more on friends and family in the future.

Instagram releases Threads: Insta, but for only your best friends

The first example of this is Threads. This app is best compared to Instagram, but only for your closest friends. Threads, like Insta, is a photo app. You can’t put photos and videos on a public profile, but you can only share them with your ‘close friends’. This list was already added to Instagram itself in 2018, so that you can keep certain Stories within the circle of friends.

Furthermore, Threads is similar to Insta. For example, you can edit pictures with texts, stickers and emoji, as you are used to. The Story mode also works as usual. However, the app is separate from Instagram. You therefore do not necessarily have to import a Good Friends list from Instagram, but you can put together a new selection.

Threads Auto Status

Temporary statuses

Another unique feature of Threads is its public statuses. Besides being able to choose a default description such as “Studying” or “Working”, you can also turn on the Auto Status option. Threads ‘recognize’ what you are doing based on your location, speed and battery percentage.

For example, Auto Status indicates that you are at the cinema, sitting at a cafe, or currently driving. In these cases, your status states that you are not available. This function is disabled by default and you have to enable it yourself for privacy reasons. Threads will be available in the App Store later today and will be free to download.
