More popular than used EV

The diesel is in dire straits. More and more manufacturers are slowly but surely phasing out their diesel offerings and the future of this fuel type does not seem too bright. That used to be different and so the range of diesel used cars is still very good. However, interest in this offer is a lot less than it was two years ago, although it seems that the low point is behind us, according to data from Gaspedal.nl. And, equally important, diesels are still more popular than electric cars. We have delved a little deeper and look at what the most popular used diesels are.
Most popular diesels
The most popular diesel models are commercial vehicles, station wagons and SUVs respectively. Not surprising, because these are the cars that travel the most kilometers. An overview of the most popular diesels per body style is as follows:
- Most popular commercial vehicle: Volkswagen Caddy
- Most popular station wagon: BMW 5-series
- Most popular SUV: Volvo XC60
- Most popular passenger car: BMW 5-series
It is clear that diesel still plays a significant role in the used car market, more than electric cars and more than a year ago. However, the question is how long this will last.
Disaster year 2022
In 2022, demand for diesels plummeted, mainly because the price of a liter of diesel rose enormously. There were days when the price of diesel barely exceeded the price of petrol and many diesel owners did not know how quickly to get rid of their car. Buying a diesel used car was also not attractive: in December 2022, only 7.2% of Gaspedal.nl visitors searched for a diesel used car, compared to 12.1% in January of that year. The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused, among other things, a rise in fuel prices, with diesel as the main victim.
Interest is now a bit broader
Nowadays, fuel prices have normalized somewhat, which means that the diesel used car can count on a little more attention again. The figures from before the raid are not reached, but in October the diesel share in searches was 9.6%, which represents a clear increase compared to a year earlier.
Diesel still more popular than electric
Diesel may have a hard time on the used car market, but it is still a more popular fuel than electricity. Petrol is, as always, the most searched for fuel variant with 53% of searches, followed by hybrid propulsion with just under 25%. Diesel is in third place (9.6%), compared to electric in fourth place with 8.2%. LPG comes in at the bottom, with 1.9%. Electric may certainly be on the rise, but diesel cars are still doing better. This is largely due to the high purchase price of EVs, compared to the more attractive prices for diesel models.
Average price of used diesel cars is rising
The price for diesel cars is rising again, as is the price of more or less all cars. A diesel used car costs an average of €22,090, which is an increase compared to two years ago, when a diesel cost an average of €19,406. In 2022, when diesel reached its lowest point in terms of popularity, the price barely rose, but the road to upwards has now started again with the necessary determination.
