Into the Wild: Honda Accord (2001)

What, a 2001 Honda Accord in ‘In the Wild’? That seems out of place, but this specific model is a real rarity in the Netherlands. Especially with rear doors!

In the 1990s it was customary at Honda to have several completely different models worldwide within one model line. That can be quite expensive, but fortunately they had a collaboration with Rover in Europe. Rover 200 brother Honda Concerto is a good example of this collaboration, but later the Honda Civic and Honda Accord also got English roots here.

The complicated thing is that that English basis did not apply to every body shape of the Civic or Accord. For example, the five-door Civic, like the Aerodeck station wagon version, was of English origin, while the three-door Civic, Civic sedan and Civic coupé came from Japan or the US. Apart from their name, these cars actually had nothing to do with the European Civics.

With the Honda Accord it was exactly the other way around. The fifth generation of the sedan was a twin brother of the Rover 600 from 1993, but the station wagon, sold sporadically, was imported from the US like the coupé. Even when relations with Rover were cooled by BMW’s takeover of that brand, Honda continued on the same path. The sixth-generation Accord appeared in Asian, American and European form and those cars had very little to do with each other.

The European Accord appeared as a sedan and for the first time also as a liftback, but a station wagon was omitted this time. Yet another variant was imported from the United States: the coupé. The slender two-door with its NSX-like butt has always remained a rare appearance and is also clearly different from the European Accord at the front.

The Accord you see above is the sedan version of this Accord Coupé. The nose may look familiar, although the American version still distinguishes itself with an orange strip at the bottom of the headlights. The butt is unique to the sedan and may look fine in our opinion. Nice detail: this copy still seems to have its original American model towbar.
