Apple has officially released iOS 14.5. The update is now available for download and adds several major improvements to your iPhone and iPad. We will list everything for you.

Download iPadOS 14.5 and iOS 14.5: this is how you do it

After multiple test versions, Apple has released iOS 14.5 for all supporting devices. If your iPhone supports iOS 14, you can also download and install version 14.5. In addition to several new functions, the update also improves the security of your device. So we recommend installing it soon.

This works as follows. Does the update not yet appear on your iPhone or iPad? Then we recommend that you wait.

  1. Make sure your iPhone or iPad battery is at least 50 percent full, or hang it on the charger;

  2. Go to the Settings app and tap ‘General’;

  3. Select ‘Software Update’ and follow the instructions on the screen.

iOS 14.5: This is all new

iOS 14.5 is more than just another interim update. A few times a year, Apple releases a big step forward and version 14.5 certainly falls into this category. We list the biggest improvements for you below.

The most important new feature is that you can now unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch, provided it is running watchOS 7.4. If you wear a mouth mask, Face ID on your iPhone often does not work properly. When you hold an unlocked Apple Watch (Series 3 or later) near your iPhone, you can still access your device. If you want to use Face ID with a mouth mask, you have to set this up.

Furthermore, apps must now request permission to post tracking codes. With this tracker warning, Apple wants to protect users against the collection of privacy-sensitive information. Advertisers use these to be able to offer targeted advertising.

More improvements in the new update

We list a number of other, smaller innovations:

  • 217 new emoji, such as the new ‘vaccination emoji’ you see above.
  • You can now use 5G on both SIM cards of the iPhone 12.
  • Support for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X game controllers.
  • Siri now supports 112. If you say “Hey Siri, call the emergency services”, the number will be dialed automatically after a timer expires.
  • A new design for the Podcast and Reminders apps.

In addition to the above improvements, iOS 14.5 will also fix a number of bugs. So, even if you don’t need the features described above, it is still recommended to install the update as soon as possible. That makes your iPhone and iPad a lot safer.
