Good news for all iPhone users: Beta 2 of iOS 17.1 is already here, and it includes some exciting changes and innovations. The Standby function in particular has been addressed and, yes, the ringtones are back. But not in the way you think.
iOS 17.1 beta 2: improvements for Standby
Standby gets some extra attention in this beta with a few new options to customize your display settings. In the Standby menu you will now find new settings under ‘Display’ that allow you to switch off your screen automatically, after 20 seconds or… simply never!
In particular, the option to always keep your Standby widgets visible will be an interesting addition for many people. Please note: these new display options are only available on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro for the time being.
iOS 17.1 beta 2: the ringtones are back
A notable return in this update are the ringtones that were available in iOS 17, but were mysteriously absent in the first beta of iOS 17.1. Not only are they back, but they’re just as subtle and soft as you know them from iOS 17.0. There is a bonus: you can now set custom tones!
Troubleshooting and Double Tap for your Watch
Apple has also made some improvements for users who may have encountered issues with widgets that should appear on both iOS and macOS. These no longer remain empty when running mismatched iOS and macOS releases.
For Apple Watch users, iOS 17.1 and watchOS 10.1 beta 2 also include the new Double Tap feature, available for Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. A fun new way to navigate your Watch, more about which can discover in our hands-on with the new feature.
