Apple is working on the next update again! In December, iOS 18.2 brings new features to your iPhone. This is them!
iOS 18.2
Apple has only just released iOS 18.1, but the company is already working hard on the next update. In December it will be the turn of iOS 18.2, which brings several new features to your iPhone. We cannot yet use the majority of the features in the Netherlands and Belgium, because Apple Intelligence will only be available in the European Union in April.
We will therefore have to miss features such as Image Playground and Genmoji for the time being. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see any new features in iOS 18.2, as Apple is making a number of small changes. These include improvements to Find My, the dark app icons and setting default apps on your iPhone. Curious about all the adjustments? This is what you can expect from iOS 18.2!
1. Find my
Apple is adding a new feature to the Find My app in iOS 18.2. After installing the update, you can temporarily share the location of an AirTag with someone. You do this by sending a link, where you can set an expiration date. This is especially useful if you have lost your AirTag, because you can also share the link with your airline, for example. This makes it easier to find your AirTag.
The recipient of the link can see the location of the AirTag for a limited time. Have you found the AirTag? Then sharing the location will automatically stop. In addition, an expiration date will appear, so that you only temporarily share the AirTag with an organization or person. This feature in iOS 18.2 is mainly intended for finding lost items. The link can also be opened on an Android device.
2. Integration of ChatGPT
With Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT comes standard on your iPhone, making it easier to use the chat service. Just like with the chatbot, ChatGPT on the iPhone has a limit, which will be shown from iOS 18.2. For more advanced features, you’ll need to take out a paid subscription to ChatGPT. That doesn’t mean you have to pay for Siri, because Apple’s voice assistant remains free to use.
You have to pay a considerable amount for ChatGPT Plus, because the subscription costs no less than 22.99 euros per month. Do you think that’s too much? Then you can also opt for the free version. In that case, you can only put together two images with ChatGPT and you have less room to ask questions to the chatbot. From iOS 18.2 you can subscribe to ChatGPT directly via the settings of your iPhone. So you no longer have to visit a special website for this.
3. Dark symbols apps
Since iOS 18, it has been possible to activate a dark mode for the symbols of all apps. Apple improves this function in iOS 18.2, because the icons of all apps are darkened in the list in the settings of your iPhone. We still see many applications there with a white background or light accents, but from iOS 18.2 onwards this is no longer the case. The dark mode is becoming more and more extensive.
4. Camera controller
Have you already gotten the new iPhone 16 (Plus) or the iPhone 16 Pro (Max)? Then you get an exclusive feature in iOS 18.2. After installing the update, you can fix the camera exposure via the camera controller. You determine the exposure of the image with a light press of the button. Also useful: from iOS 18.2 it is possible to adjust how quickly you have to double-press the camera control.
5. More features in iOS 18.2
Apple is also making minor changes in iOS 18.2. This makes it possible for the first time to remove standard apps. You can delete applications such as the App Store, Camera, Photos and Safari from your iPhone, but be careful. It is recommended that you install a similar app first so that you can still use its features. These features become even more available with iOS 18.2:
- More options in the Assignments app for Condition;
- You can now ask written questions to Siri via a shortcut in the Control Panel;
- Set maximum volume on the iPhone;
- Export and import your history in Safari;
- Favorite categories in the Podcasts app.
Release of iOS 18.2
We will just have to wait a little longer for iOS 18.2, because Apple will release the update at the end of this year. By looking at previous years we can already predict the release. Last year, iOS 17.2 was released on December 11, a year earlier, iOS 16.2 was released on December 13. In 2021, iOS 15.1 was released on December 13, so it’s almost certain that iOS 18.2 will be released around the same time.
Apple usually releases new software versions on a Monday or Tuesday, so that means you have iOS 18.2 on December 9 or 10 can install. The update may appear a week later, in which case iOS 18.2 has run out December 16 or 17 available. iPadOS 18.2 and watchOS 11.2 will be released at the same time as iOS 18.2.
