iOS 18.4: Search history in Safari shows recent searches at Opening New tab

Apple has adjusted the behavior of the search bar in Safari. When you open a new Safari tab and then tap the search field, Safari automatically shows your recent search history.

This can be a handy addition, but not everyone is waiting for this. Maybe you have just searched for a gift for your loved one and you would like to keep it secret. Unfortunately you cannot eliminate the search history for the time being, but you can delete in a simple way.

Search history in Safari

The function below is available from iOS 18.4 and iPados 18.4

From the address bar in Safari you can not only enter a website, but also searches. For example, search for ‘iPhone recovery appletips’ and tap ‘go’ to immediately search the search engine you set.

These searches were not visible in previous versions of iOS and iPados, but a list of recent searches is kept from iOS 18.4 and iPados 18.4. This allows you to quickly re -consult them at a later time.

View searches

You can easily consult all your searches afterwards as soon as you open a new tab or window in Safari. As soon as you tap the address/search bar, the list of recent searches will be opened.

Safari Delete searches

  • Open a new tab or window in Safari
  • Tap the address and search bar
  • The recent searches will be opened
  • Tap ‘delete everything’
  • The full content is removed

Turn off recent searches

At the time of writing it is not yet possible to disable the recent searches in Safari on an iPhone or iPad. All you can do is delete the list when you look the best. Or use the Safari private mode, then no data is stored.
