iPhone 14 and 14 Pro: Samsung will reserve its best screens for certain models only

Samsung Display will provide Apple with OLED screens for its new iPhone 14, but not all models will be entitled to the best technologies offered by the Korean manufacturer.

The iPhone 14 series will be available in two “classic” models and two “Pro” models. Today, The Elec tells us that Samsung Display would keep the cream of its OLED screens for the two most expensive iPhone 14 models. A choice that would allow Apple to save some money.

OLED screens of different qualities for the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro

Apple will use two suppliers for the screens of its iPhones. The first, Samsung, will produce OLED panels for the four smartphone models. For its part, LG Display will only deal with two models. Against the backdrop of inflation and rising material prices, Apple wants to save on production costs.

The American giant has therefore decided to keep the same screen technology as its iPhone 13 and 13 Pro for its future iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. These last two models, which should benefit from 6.1 and 6.7 inch screens, will thus use Samsung’s M11 technology. On the other hand, the two models “Pro” and “Pro Max” will benefit from OLED screens with M12 technology.

The latter will also be used in the next folding smartphones from Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 which will be officially presented on August 10. Samsung will thus have the first to present products equipped with this technology a few weeks before its great American rival.

An ever more marked range strategy

Thus, the OLED panels of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will be made of low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) while the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will have OLED panels made of low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO). This latest technology makes it possible to adjust the refresh rate of the screen according to the content displayed in order to minimize the impact of the panel on the energy consumption of the device.

The LTPO TFT panels are those used by Apple to offer its ProMotion display technology with a variable refresh rate of 120 Hz on the “Pro” models of iPhone. We can then deduce that the Apple brand will apply the same range strategy as on the iPhone 13 series: 60 Hz screens for the “classic” models (iPhone 14 and 14 Plus) and 120 Hz screens for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

This year, Apple would highlight its Pro models much more than last year, distinguishing them more clearly from other models. Beyond the screen, for example, we know that the iPhone 14 Pro will be more powerful than the other models, which is currently not the case with the iPhone 13.
