It is almost impossible to list the differences between the new Apple phones. However, in this iPhone 14 vs iPhone Pro comparison, we give it a try.
Comparison: iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro
They are both made by Apple and the screen size is similar, but that’s where the similarities between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro end. In this article we walk step by step all the differences between the cheapest and most expensive iPhone of this year.
Design: bye notch, hello island
In terms of design, the iPhone 14 has changed little from the iPhone 13. The device still has a screen notch at the top of the front and the camera lenses on the back are placed diagonally.
The Pro model has changed. The biggest change has to do with the notch. This screen notch has given way to a more oval shape that is jokingly referred to as “the pill”. Apple itself speaks of a Dynamic Island.
This black bar can change shape automatically. He takes the situation into account.
For example, if you receive a bell, the Dynamic Island will become larger and you will see in the bar who is trying to reach you. If you connect your AirPods to the iPhone 14 Pro (Max), the island will tell you how much power is left in the earbuds.
Screen is always on
The iPhone 13 mini has not received a successor. In other words, there is no longer a small iPhone. You can now choose from two screen sizes. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro have a 6.1-inch screen, while the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max with 6.7 inches are a bit bigger.
That’s where the similarities end. For example, the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) has an always-on display, unlike the entry-level model. As the name suggests, such a screen is always on – albeit in a minimal way.
An always-on screen shows useful information (such as the weather and time) without having to unlock the device.
Furthermore, the Pro models have an edge in terms of animations. They have ProMotion technology, or adaptive refresh rate. This sounds difficult, but the bottom line is that the pixels of the screen refresh between 1 and 120 times per second.
A higher refresh rate produces smoother images, but also consumes more power. An always-on display therefore has a refresh rate of 1 Hertz (Hz), while playing games requires 120Hz.
Also good to know: the screen of the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) can be slightly brighter than that of the entry-level model. The latter stays at 1200 nits, while the Pro goes up to 2000 nits. This is useful when reading the screen in bright sunlight.
Colors: five vs four
The iPhone 14 is available in five colors: blue, purple, midnight (black), starlight (white) and red. With the iPhone 14 Pro you can go for four variants: deep purple, gold, silver and space black.
Not only the colors differ, because the housings are also different. For example, the iPhone 14 (Plus) has an aluminum jacket, while the Pros are made of stainless steel. In addition, the more exclusive models have a matte back, while the entry-level versions are more glossy.
Best iPhone camera ever
If you work a lot with photography, then the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) is made for you. This device takes much better photos and videos than its brother.
iPhone 14 (Plus) | iPhone 14 Pro (Max) |
---|---|
Main camera: 12 megapixel | Main camera: 48 megapixel |
Ultra wide-angle lens: 12 megapixel | Ultra wide-angle lens: 12 megapixel |
Telephoto lens: none | Telephoto lens: 12 megapixel |
This is largely due to the new main camera. This has a resolution of 48 megapixels, a record for iPhones. By squeezing pixels – a technique called pixel binning – photos of the Pro models have much more detail than before.
In addition, the Pro phones have a larger sensor, allowing the lens to collect more light. The result: always well-exposed photos and videos. Furthermore, with the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) you can zoom in optically up to 3 times, while the ‘normal’ iPhone 14 has to do with digital zoom. Hereby you compromise on quality while getting the image closer.
All this is not to say that the iPhone 14’s camera is bad. On the contrary. Apple has indeed upgraded the camera. For example, the iPhone 14 (Plus) has received a larger sensor, so that you can take neat pictures even in harsh light conditions.
Furthermore, Apple has polished the front camera of all iPhone 14 models. This has a new autofocus system and therefore makes better selfies.
Hardware: faster chip, more storage
There are also significant differences between the entry-level iPhone and the Pro model under the hood. The former has an A15 Bionic chip, just like the iPhone 13, while the iPhone 14 Pro is powered by its service successor, the A16 Bionic. Of course, this is more powerful than the A15, making the device just a little faster.
An additional advantage: the A16 chip is more energy-efficient than its predecessor. As an iPhone 14 Pro user, you can enjoy a slightly longer battery life. Apple is never generous with specifications, but does mention that you can play videos continuously for up to 23 hours on the 14 Pro. In comparison, the entry-level model comes up to 20 hours.
There are also differences in the storage capacity. You can buy the iPhone 14 (Plus) with 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage. The iPhone 14 Pro (Max) adds another version with 1TB. The amount of RAM is the same for all models: 6GB.
Higher prices iPhones
Whichever iPhone 14 you buy, the prices are considerably higher than last year.
Here are the iPhone 14 prices:
- iPhone 14: 1019 euros
- iPhone 14 Plus: 1169 euros
- iPhone 14 Pro: 1329 euros
- iPhone 14 Pro Max: 1479 euros
The iPhone 13 series cost a lot less:
- iPhone 13 mini 809 euros
- iPhone 13: 909 euros
- iPhone 13 Pro: 1159 euros
- iPhone 13 Pro Max: 1259 euros
The new entry-level model has therefore become more than 100 euros more expensive. For the Pro version you pay 170 euros more than last year. This price increase is striking, because since the iPhone X from 2017, the more exclusive model has always had a starting price of 1159 euros.
