iPhone 16 Pro camera update will fix a major annoyance

The iPhone 16 Pro is getting a camera update. And it will at least fix a major annoyance.

On the iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max and later, all pro models of the iPhone have a macro function. This allows you to take photos from very close up. Since iOS 15.2, Apple has also added something new for this. If you hold your iPhone close to a subject, a macro slider appears. With this you can quickly switch the macro mode on or off.

These macro photos are taken by the ultra wide angle lens on your iPhone. But if you have ever used the function you will have noticed something. The lens is not as good as the lens of the main camera. You can see this especially when it is a bit darker. There is a bit more noise in the photo and it all looks a bit blurry (and often darker).

Of course, you can try to position your iPhone so close to the subject that the macro mode is not activated. You then take a photo with the main camera of your device. However, that is not the ideal solution, because you can take a photo much less close.

Now for the good news: the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be getting a camera update, with a 48MP ultra-wide lens. That means your macro photos are about to get a whole lot better.

If every lens on the iPhone 16 Pro has the same quality, it doesn’t matter which camera you use to take the photo. It could even be possible that Apple won’t even show the macro icon when taking a macro photo.

Disable macro control

Don’t like the Macro slider at all? And you’re not going to use it anyway, even with the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera upgrade? You can turn it off, too. Here’s how to turn off the Macro slider:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Scroll down and tap on ‘Camera’;
  3. Set the switch behind ‘Macro Controller’ to gray.
