iPhone 16 Pro models will be a lot bigger: we already know this

It looks like the iPhone 16 Pro models will have a larger screen than the current iPhone 15 Pro models. This is what we already know.

iPhone 16 Pro models will be a lot bigger

Since the introduction of the iPhone 12 in 2020, Apple has not significantly adjusted the screen sizes of the various iPhone models. This will change with the iPhone 16 series, which will be launched in 2024.

According to various sources, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a larger screen than the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a 6.27-inch (159.31 mm) screen and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.85-inch (174.06 mm) screen.

Advantages of a large format

A large screen means that the dimensions of the housing of the new iPhone also increase. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are therefore slightly longer than their predecessors and also slightly wider.

Thanks to the more spacious housing of the devices, Apple has more internal space for parts. The iPhone 16 Pro models may have larger batteries that last longer. The screen itself may also receive some improvements and rumors are swirling about all kinds of additional features.

More efficient display technology

Apple is considering using microlens technology for the screen of the new iPhone. This would maintain or increase the brightness of OLED screens while reducing energy consumption.

These so-called MLA (Micro-Lens Arrays) use a uniform pattern of billions of lenses in the panel to reduce internal reflection. The reflected light also increases perceived brightness without increasing power consumption.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

We don’t expect any changes to the size of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. These devices will therefore have the same size as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. It is likely that Apple will opt for the 6.27- and 6.86-inch display sizes with the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus in 2025. This would mean that the entire iPhone 17 series will use an aspect ratio of 19.6:9.

  • iPhone 6S to iPhone 8 (2015-2017): The iPhone 6S, 7 and 8 series kept the same size variants as their predecessors: 4.7 inches for the regular models and 5.5 inches for the Plus models.
  • iPhone X and later (2017–present): With the introduction of the iPhone The iPhone X had a 5.8-inch screen, which was halfway between the two previous sizes. Later models expanded on this concept, with screen sizes increasing further in variants such as the iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11 Pro Max and later models.
  • iPhone 12 mini & iPhone 13 mini (2020-2021): The iPhone 12 mini was the first iPhone since the original iPhone SE that Apple released a new model specifically designed to be smaller and more compact. With a 5.4-inch screen, the device catered to users who preferred a smaller, handier iPhone that could easily be operated with one hand. The iPhone 13 mini continued this trend, but demand for such devices is relatively low compared to the larger models.
