VLC Chromecast iPhone support now available

VLC has been a household name when it comes to video players for years. On both PC and Mac, it is one of the most convenient ways to play a variety of video formats. The app is also popular on iOS, although this version is always slightly behind the desktop version.

For example, it was already possible to send videos with VLC to a Chromecast via a Mac. From version 3.1.0 this handy feature makes the switch to the iPhone. This allows you to watch a series or movie on your iPhone or iPad on the go, and when you return home, send it directly to your Chromecast in your TV to continue watching on the big screen.

This works very easily. You simply tap the Chromecast icon and then choose the Chromecast device to which the video should be sent. With this, the function of VLC works the same as streaming to AirPlay on an Apple TV.

In addition to the addition of VLC Chromecast in the iOS app, the update introduces some other features. For example, you can now watch 360-degree videos by turning your iPhone around and a number of annoying bugs have been fixed. These prevent you from seeing certain video files and make the app faster and more stable. The update to VLC 3.1.0 is now available in the App Store.

Want to know more about the Chromecast?

A Chromecast is a video player from Google that makes a ‘dumb’ TV smart. By plugging the device into an HDMI port on your TV, you can make the tube suitable for streaming files from a smartphone, tablet or PC. That makes the Chromecast a cheap alternative to the Apple TV from Apple, which with its own remote control and the tvOS software focuses more on delivering a complete user experience.
