iPhone hacks: 11 things your phone can do without you knowing

With each new iOS version, Apple adds new functions to your iPhone, but there are also hacks that your iPhone can already do without realizing it!

Hacks your iPhone can already do

You use hacks to improve your iPhone experience. With such a hack you can teach Siri to correctly pronounce the names of your family and friends, or use a faster way to adjust the camera’s video settings. We list the best 11 hacks for you!

1. Teach Siri to pronounce names correctly

Siri doesn’t automatically pronounce all names correctly. Foreign first and last names in particular often prove to be difficult. But with this iPhone hack you can improve Siri’s pronunciation.

To do this, activate Siri and then say “Learn to pronounce (insert name)’s name”. Siri then asks you to say the first and last names back to back, and then gives you several suggestions to choose from.

2. View unread emails

When you see that you have received new emails, you can open the Mail app and look for the unread emails. But it can also be faster and easier. Just hold your finger on the Mail icon and tap “All incoming” in the menu that appears to go straight to unread emails.

3. Wi-Fi Assistance

There are still houses where the WiFi reception is very poor in some places. Streaming music or videos is then regularly interrupted because the connection is lost. One of the hacks that your iPhone can already do is use mobile data when your Wi-Fi connection is poor. That function is called Wi-Fi assistance and you can find it in ‘Settings>Mobile network’.

4. Set your personal vibration pattern

You can use different ringtones for different contacts. Only you don’t have that much use if your iPhone is on silent all day. That’s why it’s a good idea to adjust the vibration pattern as well.

To do this, open the Contacts app and select the desired contact. Then tap “Edit” in the top right and then tap the “Ringtone” field. Now tap on the ‘Vibrate’ field to adjust the vibration pattern. You can choose one of the presets, but you can also create a completely new vibration.

5. Use spirit level

The level function has long been very useful. The spirit level used to be in the compass, but you can now find the function in the Measure app. You can use the spirit level both standing and lying down. Because of the camera bump, we recommend a relatively thick cover, so that you can lay your iPhone as straight as possible. That works just a bit easier.

6 Adjust the brightness of the flashlight

The flashlight is also very useful. You can turn it on and off from the lock screen, but did you know you can also adjust the brightness? For that you have to go to the control panel and hold your finger on the flashlight icon. You can now adjust the brightness in four steps. Without a doubt one of the most useful hacks your iPhone can do!

7. Exit multiple apps at once

Swipe up from the bottom to open the app switcher. There you can quickly navigate between your open apps or close them by swiping them up. If you swipe up with two fingers at once, you can also close two apps at once. That makes you twice as fast!

8. Quickly adjust video quality

Since iOS 13, Apple has introduced a feature that allows you to quickly and easily adjust both the video quality and frame rate of your videos. To do this, open the camera app and select “Video”. In addition to the front camera, you will now see the parameters, for example 4K – 60, as in the example below. Tap on them to change them. This is a lot faster than navigating to ‘Settings>Camera>Record video’.

9. Lock autofocus

The autofocus can be very useful, but sometimes you want to take a special shot and the camera keeps focusing on the wrong part of the image. One of the hacks that your iPhone can already do is prevent this by locking the autofocus. To do this, simply press and hold your finger on the image area you want to focus on in the Camera app. After a short while, ‘AE/AF lock’ appears on the screen, which means that the lock has been activated successfully.

10. Search photos by subject

The Photos app has been using machine learning for several years now. This allows iOS to recognize people, animals, objects, and even landscapes. To do this, tap the ‘Search’ tab in the app. In addition to the existing suggestions, you can also enter your own search term, for example ‘dog’. All images with dogs will then be displayed.

11. Use volume buttons for photos and videos

If you want to take a photo or record a video, you don’t necessarily have to tap the button on the screen. You can also use the volume buttons. Although you can take a simple photo with both buttons, the functions are different if you press and hold them individually. The volume up button starts a continuous recording (you can also disable this feature in the settings), while the volume down button records a video – but only during the time you hold the button.
