Is your iPhone’s storage full? Don’t immediately delete your photos, because that is often not necessary. Check these settings first!
iPhone storage full? Don’t delete photos, but check this first!
Everyone with an iPhone will sooner or later have to deal with it: the storage of your iPhone is full. Annoying! Because your smartphone keeps nagging that you need to free up space as quickly as possible.
The first thing that might come to mind is to start deleting photos. But often that is of little use. A photo doesn’t take up that much space and you have to delete quite a few of them to free up enough space for the next iOS update, for example.
Therefore, first check the settings below if your iPhone’s storage is full, because this will free up a lot of space quickly. Moreover, you do not have to delete your precious photos.
Optimize storage
The easiest way to free up some space on your iPhone is to optimize the photos and videos already on your iPhone. Your photos will then not be thrown away, but will be largely stored in iCloud.
Optimize photo and video storage on your iPhone
- Go to Settings’;
- Scroll down and tap ‘Photos’;
- Then choose ‘Optimize iPhone Storage’.
Please note: you can only choose to optimize your iPhone storage if you also have the slider next to ‘iCloud Photos’ turned on. Depending on the amount of photos and videos you have on your iPhone, this optimization may take a while. But once you’re done, your iPhone’s storage won’t be that full anymore.
The full-resolution photos and videos on your iPhone are replaced by small versions. You can download the full resolution versions from iCloud at any time.

Delete the largest apps (that you hardly use anyway)
Another way to quickly free up a lot of space is to delete the largest apps on your iPhone. But how do you find out which app takes up the most space? To do this, follow the steps below.
- Go to Settings’;
- Scroll down and choose ‘General’;
- Open the ‘iPhone Storage’ option;
- Scroll down and you’ll see exactly which apps take up a lot of space;
- Tap an app you want to remove and choose ‘Remove app’.
On your iPhone storage details page, there may also be an option under ‘Recommendations’ to automatically clean up apps. By tapping ‘Enable’ here you can free up even more space when your iPhone’s storage is full.
