iOS 18 brings new features, but you don’t want to have them all enabled. In these iPhone tips: 5 features you should turn off after the update!
iPhone Tips: 5 Features You Should Turn Off
Of course you don’t have to do anything, but we think it’s a good idea to check out these five functions!

1. Automatic sharing
If you’re only going to turn off one of the five features we’ve listed here, make it this one. You don’t need the “Auto Share” feature. When it’s on, content shared with you in the Messages app will automatically show up in all sorts of other apps. It’s better to control that yourself when you need it. Here’s how to turn it off:
- Open the Settings app;
- Tap ‘Apps’ at the bottom and then ‘Messages’;
- Tap ‘Shared with you’;
- Turn off the ‘Automatic sharing’ option.
2. Lock Screen Shortcuts
Number two of these iPhone tips is especially for anyone who has been annoyed by the flashlight and camera shortcuts on the Lock screen for years. Now that you have iOS 18 installed, you can finally get rid of them. And not only that, you also have the option to replace them. Here’s how it works:
- Tap the screen to display the Lock screen;
- Long press the Lock screen;
- Tap ‘Customize’ and then ‘Lock Screen’;
- Tap the minus sign at the bottom next to the flashlight.
After that, tap the minus sign next to the camera as well. If you want to place another shortcut, tap the plus sign and choose one from the available apps that appear.
3. Remove text from icons
Number three of these iPhone tips was also not possible before. You can now remove the text under the icons. Since you know the icons of the apps you use anyway, that is a good idea. An automatic consequence is that the icons are displayed slightly larger. This is how you set it:
- Long press on an empty part of the home screen;
- Tap ‘Change’ at the top left, then ‘Customize’;
- In the menu that appears at the bottom, tap ‘Large’.
4. Optimized charging
This feature may already be set to optimal, depending on how you configured your settings before updating to iOS 18. You now have a number of new options when it comes to charging your iPhone 15 (and iPhone 16). For example, you can now take advantage of extended charging limits. Previously, you could choose a limit of 80 percent, now you can also choose 85, 90 and 95 percent.
It is good for the battery that this reduces the time that your iPhone is fully charged. This is especially true for people who often leave their iPhone plugged in for long periods of time. Here is how to adjust it:
- Open the Settings app;
- Tap ‘Battery’;
- Tap ‘Charging’;
- Select the desired percentage.
When choosing the percentage, consider how you use your iPhone. If you can charge all day, a lower limit like 80 or 85 percent is sufficient. If you need the battery to last longer, choose 90 or 95 percent.
5. Restore Photos app
We’ll close this week’s iPhone tips with a tip for the new Photos app. Can’t find any photos after updating to iOS 18? Then it’s time to customize the app to your own preferences. The Photos app in iOS 18 divides your photos into Collections. For example, you can now see Recent Days, People & Pets, and Travel. There’s a good chance that you find this far too much and that this is the main reason that you can’t see the forest for the trees. Here’s how to customize it:
- Open the Photos app;
- Scroll all the way down;
- Tap ‘Customize and change order’.
To turn off Collections, simply tap on them. To change the order, simply drag them to the right place.
