These are the biggest annoyances in iOS & this is how you solve them

Although every iOS version is better than the previous one, there are always annoyances. In addition, new annoyances are also regularly added. In this week’s iPhone tips we cover the biggest annoyances and show you how to solve them!

1. Previews of photos appear unexpectedly

We start these iPhone tips with photos that suddenly pop up. Think of memories of holidays, for example. This may be useful for some people, but it can also be quite irritating when personal photos suddenly appear on your screen in a large format. Especially when they are really private, embarrassing or inappropriate.

These unexpected previews appear, for example, in the Photos app on the ‘For you’ and ‘Search’ tabs, as well as in the app’s widgets. Fortunately, you can easily turn off the previews:

  • Open the Settings app;
  • Scroll down a bit and tap ‘Photos’;
  • Scroll down and turn off “Show Featured Content.”

2. ‘Tap on back’ function starts unintentionally

The ‘Tap on the back’ function has existed since iOS 14. Initially it seemed nice, a secret extra button on your iPhone. Handy for the flashlight! But since the flashlight is turned on at random and doesn’t turn on when you want it to, the fun is a bit gone. This is how you can disable the function:

  1. Open the Settings app;

  2. Tap ‘Accessibility’ then ‘Touch’;

  3. Scroll down and tap ‘Tap Back’;

  4. Set both options here to ‘None’.

3. Phone call ends accidentally

Number three of these iPhone tips is for the callers among us. You probably only use the standby button to quickly turn the screen on or off, or to restart your iPhone.

But while calling, you can use the button to end the call. Almost no one does that consciously. But when it happens accidentally over and over again, it’s quite annoying. Therefore, disable the option:

  • Open the Settings app;
  • Scroll down a bit and tap ‘Accessibility’;
  • Tap ‘Touch’ and scroll down;
  • Enable the option “Prevent “Lock to stop call”.

4. NameDrop automatically shares contact information

The NameDrop feature in iOS 17 lets you quickly exchange contact information via AirDrop just by holding your iPhone near another iPhone or Apple Watch.

In principle that’s nice, but it also happens when you don’t want it at all. If you accidentally put your iPhone too close to another iPhone, or if you have one work iPhone and one of your own in your bag. That’s quite annoying. This is how you can disable NameDrop on your iPhone:

  • Open the Settings app;
  • Tap ‘General’ and then ‘AirDrop’;
  • Disable the ‘Bring devices together’ option.

5. Notifications appear in Standby mode

We conclude these iPhone tips with annoying notifications in Standby. The Standby feature has been available since iOS 17 and appears when you charge your iPhone horizontally. You will only see information such as the time, your agenda and photos.

Depending on what you use Standby mode for, it is annoying when notifications appear. Maybe you use your iPhone as an alarm clock in this mode and don’t want to be disturbed. Then disable the notifications as follows:

  • Open the Settings app;
  • Tap Standby;
  • Disable the ‘Show notifications’ option.

If you now use standby mode, notifications will no longer be displayed. Only critical notifications, such as a weather alert, are still shown in Standby.
