How often do you have to consult Google because you just don’t know how to get a certain character done on your iPhone or your Mac? For example, how do you type the degree sign and how do you take a screenshot again?
The keyboard shortcuts on the Mac often require the following keys: Command (cmd) ⌘, Option (alt) ⌥, Control (ctrl) ⌃, and Shift ⇧. iPhoned put together a number of useful key combinations for you in these iPhone tips.

1. Type degree sign (°C).
Hardly anything is discussed as often in the Netherlands as the weather. So it’s very useful to know how to type the degree sign for Celsius on the Mac or on your iPhone. The degree sign can be typed in different ways, depending on the device you’re using. You can find the degree sign in these two ways:
- Mac: ‘Shift’ + ‘Option’ + ‘8’;
- iPhone: Press and hold the ‘0’, the degree symbol will appear above the 0.
If you want to make this into degrees Celsius, simply put a capital C after it.
2. Hotkey to take screenshot on Apple devices
How often do you want to forward a screenshot of a conversation? Or take a screenshot of a nice photo? With fewer and fewer buttons on the iPhone and an abundance of buttons on your Mac keyboard, it can sometimes be quite a search. No worries. We show you how to take a screenshot on your Mac and on your iPhone!
- Mac: “Shift” + “Command” + “3”;
- iPhone: Briefly press the top volume button and the power button at the same time.
Do you have an iPhone 8, iPhone SE or another model with a home button? Then taking an iPhone screenshot works slightly differently. Press the power button on the side or top and simultaneously press the home button (the circular button below the screen).
3. This is how you find the emoji overview on your MacBook
Everyone uses them now: emojis. They can be used for almost every imaginable situation, whether you are happy, angry or surprised. On your Mac, the emojis are less prominent than on your iPhone. Here’s how to find an overview of emojis on your devices:
- Mac: Press the ‘Fn’ key + ‘e’ at the same time;
- iPhone: open your keyboard and tap the emoji icon in the bottom left.
Are you sometimes endlessly looking for the right emoji? You can also search for the appropriate emoji in the overview of emojis on your iPhone. You do this by entering a search term in the search bar above the emoji overview, your iPhone will then search for the appropriate emoji. To search the overview on your MacBook, use the keyboard shortcut ‘Control’ + ‘Command’ + ‘Spacebar’. Saves some time again!
4. Shortcut to Force Shut Down on Mac and iPhone
It is very annoying when your MacBook or iPhone hangs. In that case, it’s easy to have a button or key combination to shut down your device (also known as force shutdown). You do this with the following keyboard shortcut:
- Mac: Press ‘Option’ + ‘Command’ + ‘Escape’ at the same time;
- iPhone: Short press the top volume button, then short press the bottom volume button, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
5. Type the euro, dollar, and pound sign
The euro sign is in a special place: to the right of the two in the top button bar. How do you type this euro sign? And where is the pound sign? Each currency can be found in the following way:
euros (€)
- Mac: “Option” + “2”;
- iPhone: Go to the keyboard, tap ‘123’ at the bottom left, the euro sign is below the 7.
dollars ($)
- Mac: “Shift” + “4”;
- iPhone: go to the keyboard, tap ‘123’ at the bottom left, choose ‘#+=’, the dollar sign will appear on the second row.
Pound sign (£)
- Mac: “Option” + “3”;
- iPhone: go to the keyboard, tap ‘123’ at the bottom left, choose ‘#+=’, the dollar sign will appear on the second row.
6. Open Settings menu per app on Mac
The last tip is only usable for the Mac. Are you often searching for the settings of an app? Or is there something small in an app that you would like to change? Each app on the Mac has its own settings menu, which can be easily accessed by pressing “Command” + “,” at the same time.
This way you can see the overview of settings that can be adjusted for each app. For example, you set your homepage in Safari and you adjust in Photos which parts are and are not imported. Often you discover settings that you didn’t even know existed!
