The Calculator on your iPhone has received many new functions with the arrival of iOS 18. In this week’s iPhone tips late iPhoned you can see how they work!
New features Calculator iOS 18
Initially, the Calculator looks the same in iOS 18. However, many new features have been added. In addition to the Standard view, you can also choose Scientific in portrait mode. You can also review previously performed calculations and easily convert units.
Furthermore, with Math Notes you can draw all kinds of calculations on the screen, which will then be solved immediately for you. This is especially useful on an iPad, where the Calculator app has also been available since iPadOS 18. We’ll show you how to use the new Calculator features.

1. Math Notes
The Math Notes feature is available in the Calculator app on iPhone and iPad, running iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, and how to use it:
- Open the Calculator app;
- Tap the calculator icon at the bottom left;
- Tap ‘Math Notes’;
- Now tap the ‘New Note’ icon at the bottom right;
- Tap the pen (right);
- Now tap the leftmost pen.
You can now just draw a math problem. Don’t forget the ‘=’ sign at the end, otherwise nothing will be calculated. You do have to draw somewhat neatly to ensure that everything is recognized correctly. For that reason it works a little better on an iPad than on an iPhone.
2. Use Scientific view in portrait mode
Until now, to use Scientific view, you had to switch your iPhone to landscape mode turn. This is no longer necessary since iOS 18, because you can now simply hold your iPhone and still use the Scientific view in the Calculator app. All you have to do is tap the calculator icon at the bottom left and choose Scientific. Then just use the calculator as you normally would.
3. View previously performed calculations
Since iOS 18, the Calculator has kept track of which calculations you have performed. To view them, tap the menu icon at the top left. You will then immediately see the calculations you have performed in the past 30 days.
You can tap on one of those calculations to continue with it. You can also long press it, after which you will be given the choice between ‘Copy expression’ and ‘Copy result’. Finally, via the ‘Change’ button you can remove specific or, if desired, all calculations from the list.
4. Convert units
The Calculator has had a special unit conversion mode since iOS 18. To do this, tap the calculator icon at the bottom left and enable the ‘Convert’ option. Now if you tap the unit next to any of the fields, 15 types of units will appear, such as currency, temperature and weight, which you can switch to.
Calculator iOS 18
These are all the new features of the Calculator in iOS 18. It’s quite an upgrade from what you’re used to. You can now actually do everything you will ever need with it. You will never need a physical calculator again!
