Recently, the iPhone XR has an option to change the ‘touch duration’ of Haptic Touch, so that you can quickly determine whether you have to press the screen for a short or long time to use the technique. iPhoned shows you where you can find this option and what the differences are.
Haptic Touch iPhone XR: this is how you adjust it
Where the iPhone XS and XS Max (and older iPhones) are equipped with 3D Touch, this feature is missing on the iPhone XR. Instead, Haptic Touch is present, which does not register how hard you press the screen, but for how long. You press a button and simply hold it for a moment, after which you feel a short vibration. This allows you to press and hold the flashlight or camera button on the lock screen to activate that specific function.

What you may not know is that since iOS 12.1.1, the iPhone XR gives you the option to change the touch duration of the iPhone XR. This simply means whether you press long or short on the screen to activate Haptic Touch. It can be quite useful to adjust this, for example if you find yourself often accidentally activating Haptic Touch. Follow the steps below to change your preferences.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone XR and tap ‘General’;
- Then choose ‘Accessibility’, swipe down until you see ‘Haptic Touch’. Tap here;
- You will now see two options: ‘fast’ or ‘slow’. This allows you to adjust how long it takes to activate Haptic Touch. You can then test the touch duration with the screen below.
And that was it! Since iOS 12.1.1, you can also use the haptic feedback function to preview an app. In addition, Apple seems to be planning to further expand Haptic Touch in the near future, so that the technology gets more functions.
More about the iPhone XR
The iPhone XR appeared earlier this year and is the new entry-level model for the iPhone. The device has many features that the more expensive XS and XS Max also have, although Apple has had to make concessions to keep the price reasonable. There is no dual camera, the device has an LCD screen instead of OLED and the resolution is somewhat lower. You can read all about this in our iPhone XR review (also check the conclusion below). You can currently buy the iPhone XR separately for just over 800 euros.
When Apple announced the iPhone XR and XS at the same time, we didn’t expect to eventually label the XR as the best choice. The iPhone XR, with its sharper price, is the iPhone that most people should choose this year. If you really want the best of the best, such as a dual camera lens, 3D Touch and an OLED screen, then you are the target group for which the iPhone XS or XS Max is made.
For everyone else, the iPhone XR is this year’s new standard ‘new iPhone’. The device looks nice, is pleasant to use, takes beautiful photos and can count itself among the fastest smartphones of the moment thanks to the A12 chip.
