Apple has started paying damages after the company admitted that iPhones were deliberately made slower. You need to know this.
Apple pays damages
It’s been years since the company slowed down older iPhones, but Apple has finally started paying out damages. Users who have filed a claim with Apple will receive up to 900 euros in compensation for the slowdown of older iPhones. An iPhone user receives approximately 92 dollars per claim, which is 84 euros.

Apple’s damages are the result of a lawsuit accusing the company of slowing down older iPhones. The company has admitted that this did indeed happen. The lawsuit was settled in the United States for $500 million, of which $310 goes to consumers. These compensations are now finally being paid out.
Old iPhones were made slower
Apple’s compensation is intended for users with an iPhone that has been deliberately made slower by Apple. Slowing down older models was part of iOS 10.2.1, an update released in February 2017. With the new ‘feature’, Apple wanted to prevent older iPhones from shutting down when doing heavy tasks. Older batteries were reportedly no longer able to handle these heavy tasks.
That’s why Apple chose to make the older iPhones slower so that the batteries continued to function properly. Apple made this change with iOS 10.2.1, but didn’t warn users in advance. They therefore had the idea that their iPhone needed to be replaced because it was working so slowly. On this basis, the judge determined that consumers are entitled to compensation from Apple.
Compensation will be paid for these iPhones
In addition to paying the damages, Apple has previously added the option to disable the iPhone from functioning more slowly. The company has also made it cheaper to replace the battery of your iPhone for years. Unfortunately, those prices are now back at or even above their old levels.

American users with an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone SE could file a claim for damages. The device had to run on iOS 10.2.1 or newer. This allowed some users to file multiple claims with Apple, causing total damages to quickly mount up. Unfortunately, the damage claims only apply to American consumers.
