Is Apple working on a new MacBook?

Apple MacBook Pro

Apple seems to be working on a new Macbook. The company may have registered a new version of the MacBook in the database of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) shortly before Christmas.

From an image of the database that was found by 9to5Mac, you can only say that it is a “portable computer” with a model number of A2289. We have never seen this model number before with an Apple product. In addition to the information that the laptop will run on macOS 10.15, there are so far few concrete details to be found in the image.

It is not the first time that such registrations have leaked at EEC. Various Apple products have been discovered in the past, shortly before they were officially announced, including the 10.5-inch iPad that was first revealed at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2017. A 9.7-inch iPad also appeared in the EEC database shortly before it was announced in March 2018.

Scissors or butterfly keyboard?

This new registration may therefore indicate that a new MacBook is coming. The laptop may also be equipped with the scissor keyboard, which recently returned to the new 16-inch MacBook Pro at the end of last year. Apple replaced the butterfly keyboard of the older models. Apple received a lot of criticism because of the butterfly keyboards, because they would be very sensitive to dust and small dirt. Many keyboards failed and a repair proved to be unnecessarily complicated.

MacBook Pro

The well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in July last year, when it was not yet known that Apple would switch to the scissor keyboard for the new MacBook Pro, that the butterfly keyboard would also be used for Apple laptops in 2020.

Or a MacBook Air?

Since only one MacBook was registered with EEC, there are rumors that the more expensive 13-inch MacBook Pro will be updated. This model was last revised in May last year, so it would not be a strange choice from Apple to launch a new version. This time with a good keyboard.

It is also possible that the laptop in the EEC database will become a new MacBook Air or an entry-level model of the MacBook Pro, but these models were updated somewhat later, namely in July 2019.

Macbook Air

This year, WWDC takes place between June 3 to 7 in San Jose, US. Possibly Apple will then provide more insight into the plans for a new MacBook.
