Is LPG still an interesting car fuel?

At a time when cars are switching to ‘electric’, LPG in 2022 still seems to offer some resistance to this development thanks to the supply of new vehicles and the attractive fuel price. Can you still drive well on LPG?

In the past 25 years, LPG, also known as autogas, has made several breakthroughs in the automotive world. However, this Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is running up against the trend towards electric transition. The fuel will still be used for cars for a while. It is an environmentally friendly fuel, which has a higher combustion temperature than petrol. It also contains few additives so that it burns cleanly. For example, there is also no carbon deposits in the engine.

Which cars run on LPG?

In terms of new sales, LPG recorded 1,450 new car registrations in the Netherlands in 2020. This is not a huge number, but it is a threefold increase compared to 2019. This growth is due to the Renault group, which supplied new cars with an ex-factory LPG installation. Dacia is incidentally the only brand in the Renault group that now has cars with LPG in its catalog, such as the Jogger, Sandero and Duster. You can also have a LPG installation retrofitted on many cars with a petrol engine. Most are suitable for this. These must then be inspected by the RDW once the installation has been completed. Make sure that you choose a car with G3 installation, which is a modern installation and because of a subsidy from the government it is cheaper in road tax.

How many stations?

Despite a meager supply of new cars, the network remains quite dense. At the beginning of 2022, 935 filling stations in the Netherlands will supply LPG. And yes, it is necessary to refuel about 100,000 vehicles running on the road in our country. There are 340 lpg filling stations in Belgium.

At less than a euro per liter, this fuel has an attractive price at the pump. Due to the lower excise duties, the price is more attractive than that of petrol and will cost approximately €0.90 in January 2022 (€0.77 in Belgium). You pay more road tax compared to a petrol car. However, especially if you buy a used car that already has an LPG tank in it, you will earn back the difference at 4,500 km per year.
