Issue sales ban non-CO2-free cars ‘not on the agenda’

During the two-day EU summit in Brussels that starts today, the issue of the introduction of the sales ban on non-CO2-free passenger cars and commercial vehicles will not be discussed. ANP reports this today.

Germany, but also Italy and a number of Eastern European countries, among others, are preventing a final blow from being given to the approval of the EU plan to effectively no longer allow the sale of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles that emit CO2 by 2035 . From that year, only new CO2-free cars and light commercial vehicles could be sold. Germany’s transport minister, among others, refuses to put a final signature on the plan. Germany and the alliance of countries that recently formed mainly want room in the plans for other drive modes than the battery-electric car. Consider, for example, clean(er) fuels. There would be a bill from the European Commission that would still allow the sale of cars that run on CO2-neutral fuel after 2035, but the ministers of the opposing countries have not yet seen that and so nothing is being signed. In the meantime, the EU is said to be busy amending the regulations, but that is not discussed today during the EU summit in Brussels.

ANP reports this today based on statements by an anonymous EU diplomat. It would be too early to discuss the issue at the two-day EU summit, as the German government and the European Commission are said to be in full discussion. Another senior diplomat is said to have said that he is convinced that a solution will soon be found. Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans says Germany “[…] the legal certainty that we will also do what we have promised”. According to Timmermans, the Commission has “made a number of suggestions which, if it were up to me, should be able to count on a quick reaction from Berlin”.
