Most visitors to this site will know that getting your driver’s license is not easy. Today, however, it is also becoming clear how the Netherlands compares to other countries in this respect. In addition, we also immediately look at where it is very easy to obtain a driving license!
Driving course provider Zutobi points out its own research into the differences between countries when it comes to getting a driver’s license. It is no surprise that these differences are quite large. Zutobi looked at, among other things, the costs for a driving test, the age at which you can start getting your driver’s license, any additional tests that are involved and the amount of lessons needed to start the exam.
Netherlands, Belgium and Germany
The result is presented in a list of countries where getting your driver’s license is the most difficult, and a list of countries where getting your driver’s license is very easy. Of course, the Netherlands is in the ‘difficult’ list, albeit in a reasonable fourteenth place. In Belgium finishes in 8th place, where the main difference seems to be in the fact that in Belgium a medical test is also involved. In Germany, getting a driving license turns out to be a bit easier: our neighboring country finishes in 24th place.
Not just Europe
Contrary to what you might expect, it is certainly not only Western European countries that make it difficult for potential car drivers. For example, Brazil is in second place and Chile in 7. Croatia has the dubious honor of finishing in first place here. Getting a driver’s license here means an average of 85 hours of lessons. Moreover, there are all kinds of additional tests and getting your driver’s license in Croatia is also very expensive. More expensive than anywhere else in the world, in fact, because Croatia finishes at the very top in that area too.
Comfortable
If you want to obtain a driver’s license with as little hassle as possible, you should get on a plane to Mexico as soon as possible. According to Zutobi, until 2018 this did not even require an exam at all and the current one only consists of theory. Moreover, as a 15-year-old you can already drive here. In all other countries there is a practical test involved in the driving test, but it does not amount to much everywhere. Qatar ends up on the list after Mexico, while Latvia is the ‘easiest’ European country in third place. The United States is number four. Here, getting your driver’s license is considered easy because the age of 16 is low, few lessons are needed and the costs for the exam are lower than average. The closest country to the ‘easy’ list is without a doubt France, which comes in a remarkable tenth place.
Forward and backward
As a bonus, the researchers note that in some countries it is sufficient to drive a few meters forward or backward, whether or not through a bend. This is the case, for example, in India and Egypt, countries that logically also score high when it comes to the number of road deaths.
