Jaguar will be purely electric from 2025

Jaguar says goodbye to the combustion engine. As of 2025, the British brand will only offer fully electric cars. Sister brand Land Rover is also strengthening its focus on electric cars.

It is probably the biggest change in modern history for Jaguar: by 2025 there will no longer be a new ‘Jag’ for sale with an internal combustion engine. That makes Jaguar Land Rover known. Jaguar is preparing a new model line resting on a platform dedicated to BEVs.

Well-known model names will continue to exist, but will only be marketed completely electrically. The new Jaguar XJ, which should be unveiled this year, is an exception. Jaguar says that name will be retained, but that the car does not belong to the new line-up. Whether Jaguar means that the XJ project has been completely canceled, as some sources claim, is not entirely clear. It could also mean that the XJ is the last model to come before the major renewal round and comes with both electric drive and combustion engines.

Which models or names will be preserved remains to be seen. Lovers of Jaguars with roaring engines should especially enjoy the F-type even more, because it may be the last to swing out the combustion engine.

Land Rover

Sister brand Land Rover is taking it a bit slower, but electric propulsion will also play a large part there this decade. A fully electric version of each model must also be available by 2030. JLR expects that 60 percent of Land Rovers will be fully electric in that year. We can expect the first fully electric Land Rover in 2024. That is undoubtedly the new Range Rover. Probably there is a bit earlier with a combustion engine; we previously counted on a revelation this year.

In the next five years, Land Rover will come with six models that will (also) become fully electric. To this end, it uses the MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) basis for models that are both fully electric and partially electrically powered. This includes at least the upcoming Range Rover and the new Jaguar XJ is also on that basis. A new EMA (Electric Modular Architecture) platform is intended for cars that are only available electrically.
