And again John Vanderaart’s weekly column on pcactive.nl is early in the weekend. Here you will find last week’s column if you missed it or would like to read it again.

My old Nokia 9 PureView was now really worn out. Charging was only possible wirelessly and then the battery gave up again (too) quickly. After research, the three smartphone repairers I visited were unanimous: “Throw that shit away.” What to buy then? I was initially thinking about an iPhone, but even the penultimate version would cost well over 1000 euros. Sorry, 1000 euros for a mobile phone? Then keep looking… It became a Google Pixel 7 because of the dual SIM, among other things. But also certainly because of the updates until 2027. And not unimportant: “In stock at the Coolblue store here in Haarlem!” Once I got the thing home, I wanted to install my two SIMs. Huh? There was only room for one (= 1) SIM! What now dual SIM? That dual turned out – I saw a little later – to be in the form of an e-SIM. So a software SIM… If I had known that in advance, I would have chosen a different mobile phone, period. Anyway, e-SIM… On the telecom provider’s website the price was 10 euros, after which quite a few extra administrative actions had to be carried out in connection with the verification. Quite a bit later I received a QR code with which I almost automatically transferred the e-SIM to the Google Pixel 7. Only: “Not working…” Back to the telecom provider’s website: “That will take a while.” Clearly a new technology that e-SIM. But you feel it in everything: “The hardware SIM will no longer exist in a few years!”

From SIM to ESIM. Yes, that will clearly be the future…
