KTM has finally pulled the curtain on what is undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited street bike of the year: the 990 RC R. A completely new Supersport, straight from Mattighofen, that should not only serve the adrenaline seekers, but also form a bridge between track and street. And believe us – that bridge is built with orange steel and pure racing technology.
The 990 RC R is the spiritual successor to the legendary RC8, but with a different approach in typical KTM style: less extreme superbike, more user-friendly sports machine. Yet the numbers are anything but tame. The LC8c parallel twin produces 130 hp and 103 Nm, with a curb weight that clearly falls into Supersport territory. The EURO5+ parallel twin is also remarkably light at only 57 kilos, which immediately lays the foundation for the agility that KTM’s “Ready to Race” motto is all about.
And speaking of weight, KTM does mention the weight of the engine, but how much weight the 990 RC R brings to the scale, whether dry or ready to drive, is remarkably not mentioned in the press information, but it is stated in the technical specifications on the KTM website: 184 kilos ready to drive with an empty tank, 195 kilos with a full tank.
Aerodynamics from the wind tunnel
The appearance immediately reveals where the roots lie: aerodynamic winglets, aggressive lines and compact proportions. KTM claims the fairing was developed entirely in the wind tunnel, with direct influence from the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MotoGP program. Underneath the skin is a new steel truss frame with a diecast aluminum subframe – a construction that not only provides stiffness and precision in fast corners, but also predictable feedback under acceleration.
The WP APEX suspension is fully adjustable, as it should be in this segment. Deceleration is provided by Brembo 4-piston calipers with 320 mm discs and four ABS modes, including Supermoto+ and Supersport ABS. The 8.8″ TFT screen offers a choice of different driving modes: Rain, Street, Sport and Custom. Those who want to go further can also optionally activate Track Mode, complete with telemetry such as lean angle, throttle position and acceleration data.
More than just a street racer
The 990 RC R wants to be more than a hardcore track weapon. KTM has paid a lot of attention to ergonomics. The six-point contact zones between arms, legs and torso ensure comfort on longer rides, while adjustable footpegs accommodate riders of different heights. The 16-liter tank also provides a reasonable range, something you would not expect from a pure racing monster.
In short: a motorcycle that you use to ride to work in the morning and then smash your personal lap record to pieces on the track in the afternoon.
Riaan Neveling, KTM Global Marketing Manager:
The 990 RC R TRACK – pure track power
For those who find street traffic too slow, the 990 RC R TRACK will be released in early February 2026: a completely track-oriented version that omits everything unnecessary. No ABS modulator, direct brake lines, a modified gearbox, simplified dashboard and a minimalist electronic package. Straight from the factory, without compromises.
KTM 990 RC R CUP – racing for everyone
KTM will add another interesting step in the spring of 2026: the 990 RC R CUP. A European racing program intended for riders who want to make the step from track days to competition – without immediately ending up in the lion’s den of professional racers. Participants can drive both the street legal and the TRACK version. KTM professionals will be on hand to provide guidance and feedback, a rare opportunity for emerging talent to measure themselves against the real thing.
Availability
The KTM 990 RC R will roll off the production line in Austria from October 2025, and will be available at official dealers shortly afterwards – in orange or black. The TRACK version will follow in February 2026. Prices will be announced later, but expect a hefty but fair amount for what may well be the most exciting street Supersport of the decade.
