With a lot of Tamtam, Stefan Pierer had to become the largest manufacturer in Europe in his drift MV Agusta, after which then CEO Timur Sardarov was put aside from Mattighofen a new management was installed and the sale went through the KTM channels. Pierer, however, had overplayed his hand, as a result of mismanagement, the KTM group had come to the round of the abyss, which meant that MV Agusta had to be put back on sale at the end of last year.

It is not the first time that a manufacturer had to get Balacheil from MV, Harley-Davidson it was the same way. Just before the credit crisis, the Americans had incorporated MV, was then hit hard by the credit crisis and was forced to sell MV back to the Castiglioni family for the symbolic amount of one euro.

After that, it was Mercedes-AMG’s turn that acquired 25% share in MV Agusta in 2015, but made much less investment financially than the Castiglionis expected. MV Agusta was forced to request a moratorium of payment to prevent bankruptcy.

The Mercedes share was bought back, after which the Castiglionis found a new investor in the United Kingdom in the United Kingdom in November 2016, which was part of the Black Ocean Group of the Sardarov family. The Russians received a 49% share in the MV Agusta Holding, Giovani Castiglioni held 51%. In September 2019, the acquisition was complete and Timur Sardarov was appointed as a new CEO.

In November 2022, Stefan Pierer announced the acquisition of MV Agusta. KTM AG acquired 25.1% share in MV Agusta Motor Spa and then dropped to have a majority stake within a few years, which was still denied in all keys by Sardarov at the time.

However, there was indeed a call option to acquire a majority stake in MV Agusta as of December 31, 2025, an option that was performed early last year. KTM AG received the majority interest, after which Hubert Trunkenpolz, member of the Board of Directors of the Pierer Mobility AG was encouraged as a new CEO at MV Agusta. However, at the end of last year, MV had to be put on sale again.

In the past 18 months, MV Agusta has strengthened its financial stability under a fully revitalized management team. In 2024, 4,000 motorcycles were sold, a growth of 116% compared to 2023, with the total sale of last year already matched in July. 2024 was also MV Agusta’s best year ever in terms of the sale of parts, with an availability percentage of 99% for models that were produced up to seven years ago.
