Where do we come from and what makes us different from other members of our family tree? The paleogeneticist Svante Pääbo has given humanity groundbreaking insights into these questions and has now been awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in the category of physiology or medicine. The best-known success of the scientist from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig is the decoding of the Neanderthal genome. He was also able to prove that this archaic human form and other extinct hominins have been immortalized in the genome of modern-day humans through ancient mixtures.
