Leak on Apple’s website confirms: a HomePod with a screen is coming

A leak on Apple’s website has revealed that a new HomePod with a screen is coming. Here’s what we know about the new HomePod!

Rumors have been swirling for some time that Apple is working on a new HomePod with a screen. Now, a code has surfaced on Apple’s website called ‘HomeAccessory17,1’, which seems to confirm the rumors. This name is very similar to the code that describes the current HomePod on Apple’s website, which falls under the category ‘AudioAccessory’. At the moment, there are no products that fall under the new code.

The chances are therefore very high that it concerns the new HomePod with screen. The code also indicates that the new device runs on the A18 chip, which is also expected in the iPhone 16 series. In addition, the category reveals that the device runs on a variant of tvOS. Everything therefore points to the fact that a new HomePod with display is indeed coming, which will be a combination of the HomePod and the Apple TV.

HomePod is powered by the A18 chip

It is striking that the HomePod with screen runs on an A18 chip, because the current generation still has to make do with an S7 chip. We see the same processor in the Apple Watch Series 7. With the new A18 chip, the HomePod will probably get support for Apple Intelligence, Apple’s latest technology that works with artificial intelligence.

Apple has already announced that the new AI features will only come to devices with an A17 Pro, M1 chip or later, meaning that HomePods (and Apple Watches) will not yet get Apple Intelligence. That changes with the A18 chip in the new HomePod, giving you access to handy AI features like ChatGPT and a revamped version of Siri via the HomePod’s screen.

8-inch screen on the HomePod

Previously rumored, the HomePod will have an 8-inch display, similar to the iPad mini 6. Apple has already tested tvOS running on the smaller version of the iPad, making it likely that the HomePod will have a similar display. The next generation of the speaker should thus become the central point of your home, allowing you to control smart devices with Siri.

According to the usually reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman, we will have to wait a while for the new HomePod. He predicts that we will not see a HomePod with a screen until 2025.
