Less data usage in WhatsApp

Download images and videos received in WhatsApp only via WiFi. This way you have control over your data usage.

Always fun; receive a WhatsApp message with a photo. If you do this via WiFi, then there is nothing to worry about. After all, you do not pay per MB. This is different if you are online on a data plan. The subscription is valid for a certain number of MBs per month. Photos and videos take up quite a lot of MBs. Save MBs? Then set WhatsApp to automatically download photos only when you’re online via a Wi-Fi connection.

  • Open WhatsApp.
  • Tap on Institutions.
  • Tap on Data and storage usage.
  • Tap on photos > Wi-Fi to download images only when you have wifi.
  • Tap at the top left Previous.
  • Tap on Video > Wi-Fi to download videos only with wifi.
  • Tap at the top left Previous.
  • Optionally tap audio or Documents and, in the same way, determine whether these files should be downloaded automatically.
  • Tap on whatsapp.
  • Make sure you are not in a chat conversation.
  • Tap the three dots at the top right > Institutions.
  • Tap on Data and storage usage.
  • Under the heading ‘Download media automatically’, tap When using mobile network.
  • Uncheck the media you don’t want to download through your cellular plan.
  • Tap on OK.
