Lexus shows itself from a completely different side with the ROV Concept. The ROV Concept is an ultimate leisure toy with an interesting drivetrain.
We know Lexus mainly from the sedans and SUVs, which are mainly based on luxury and indulgence, although the brand also dares to show a sportier side with its F models and cars such as the RC and LC. With the ROV Concept we get to know a completely different side of the brand. The ROV part of the name stands for Recreational Off-highway Vehicle and that’s already a strong hint of what to expect from the concept car.
Lexus ROV
The ROV Concept is a leisure machine that feels especially at home off the tarmac. The 3.12 m short, 1.73 m wide and 1.80 m high compact off-roader has a large ground clearance, off-road rubber and of course a suspension tuned for off-road use. Perhaps more interesting is the powertrain. As in the GR Yaris Hydrogen just presented, the ROV Concept contains an internal combustion engine that does not burn petrol, but hydrogen. In contrast to the Yaris, it is not about a 1.6 three-cylinder, but about a 1.0 large engine that gets hydrogen directly injected into the cylinder chambers. Hydrogen burns faster and hardly any harmful substances are released during combustion. The ROV Concept is virtually emission-free, according to Lexus. The hydrogen tank is located at the rear under the ROV, although it is of course neatly protected by the cover of the chassis.
Lexus does not seem to have concrete production plans, but the ROV Concept, like the GR Yaris Hydrogen, is a sign of Toyota’s attention to the further development of hydrogen technology.
