LG pays GM hefty compensation for battery problems Ampera-e and Bolt

General Motors has reached a settlement with South Korean LG Electronics over the costs that GM had to incur for the recall of the Chevrolet Bolt and Opel Ampera-e, because the battery of the electric cars could catch on fire.

Due to the fire hazard of the Chevrolet Bolt, more than 140,000 cars were called back to the garage. Opel’s counterpart Ampera-e was also affected by the recall. In the Netherlands, all 3,373 delivered units were recalled. The batteries of both the Bolt and the Ampera-e were replaced. GM is now receiving compensation from LG of $1.9 billion, which is more than €1.6 billion.

GM warned owners of the Bolt not to park their cars indoors or near buildings and other cars. The car manufacturer also advised against charging the battery overnight. According to the company, more than ten fires have been caused by overheating of the battery. Incidentally, there was still a nice side to the case for the victims. The new batteries in the Bolt and Ampera-e have an approximately 10 percent greater capacity.
